PPI: Government Restricts Media Freedom

Bratislava, January 22 (TASR-SLOVAKIA)

Public Policy Institute (PPI) views the Government's policies towards media and Prime Minister Robert Fico's scandalisation of journalists' work as the restriction of media freedom and a direct attack against its principles, it was reported on Tuesday in Bratislava.

"In Slovakia, it's presented as if the work of journalists represented the biggest problem of Slovak politics. However, its true problem lies in the exercise of political power and its arrogant use. After all, it's the premier himself whose selective provision of information is leading to the disregard for the media and the right of the public to be informed," said PPI head Martin Kamensky.

According to him, the prime minister is only complicating the work of journalists and is jeopardising the level of public information on the use of state budget funds.

The head of the Central European think tank also said that in standard plural democracies it's common practice, and at the same time the duty of the media, to monitor the Government's policies and update the public on how state authorities carry out their business.

"By doing so no-one wonders about inconvenient questions or about a possible fall of the government in case certain measures of a particular government are revealed. In a democracy, it forms part of the media's overseeing role," said Kamensky.
